The arduous task of preparing boat, tackle
and baits to go out fishing, the scorching
sun, the miserable sea conditions and the
tedious and endless wait are soon forgotten
when a billfish strikes your bait or lure.
The split seconds when a billfish makes his
sudden appearance going after your bait or
lure, the pandemonium of the crew at the
moment of the hook-up, the apparently long
lasting initial run, the what seems eternal
tug- of-war between his eagerness to be free
against your determination to catch him,
and, finally then, the stirring act of the
as rapidly as possible boarding or
releasing, all these are thrills that will
never be forgotten.
I'm very fortunate for having had the
opportunity of witnessing some of those
unforgettable fishing events which I later
relived while writing about them.
Those instants, measured in time, won't
amount to much. Those instants, engraved in
your mind, will last you a lifetime.
The remembrance of a release could be your
most precious reminiscence. The
satisfaction you'll feel after having
conquered your prey and letting it go free
will make your heart swell. When that fish
is revived and wiggles his tail as he starts
swimming freely is something that will
certainly give you contentment. The
realization that you had the option to
obliterate such a magnificent creature, and
chose not to, will fill you with pride.
There's more to fishing than ending the life
of a spectacular specimen that nature has
given us. There's a much more fulfilling to
the spirit
alternative: releasing it free.
We must be concerned about the future,
that's where we, and our descendants, will
spend the rest of our lives in. There could
be a tomorrow if we act as we should today.
Only then we'll make sure that someday there
will be a yesterday to reminiscence about.
Hopefully, the best is yet to come...
